I turned 1!

Well, not really. I’m 23.

But exactly one year ago, I attended Brooke Shaden’s workshop, Story-telling & Compositing, at Gulf Photo Plus. It was my very first photography workshop. And it was the day I decided that I want to be a Fine Art Photographer.

One of the exercises Brooke made us do was to write down three goals we wanted to accomplish within a year.
I wrote:
– Do at least one shoot a month
– Get into an exhibition
– Get my work on book covers

And I’m SO happy to be able to say that I ticked off all three. After the workshop I was shooting almost every week, and sometimes twice a week. I got into a group exhibition in March with The Art Beat, had my first solo exhibition in June, and got into a group exhibition in South Africa last month. A few months ago, I had my picture, Where Gravity Doesn’t Know My Name, on the cover of John Dodds’ short novel, Dead Boyfriends.
I’m telling you this just to show you that you can do anything if you set your mind to it. Know what it is you want, and go after it. Trust me, you’ll get there.

So to celebrate, I’m having a giveaway! I’m giving away one of my favorite dresses that I’ve used in a lot of shoots. I feel like even though I love it so much, it’s time for it to find a new owner (and I’ve used it too much). My sister and I call it “the Naive dress”, because that was the first picture I used it in. Here are some of the pictures with that dress:

giveaway

(L to R) Top: Hymns of The Broken, Naive, The End Is Nigh. Bottom: Bidding Farewell, You Swore You’d Never Tell, Please Come Back To Life

I ripped the sleeves for two of the pictures, and it’s got red stains from when I used it for a shoot with candle wax, so it’s not exactly in excellent condition hehe.

If you wanna enter, all you have to do is leave a comment. Tell me a story, send me your favorite quote, link me to your favorite song or novel, whatever you want. But please make sure to also post your email address so I can email you if you won and ask you for your address. I’m going to write down the names of everyone who comments, then pick randomly. And whoever wins, please send me pictures if you decide to use the dress in a shoot, I’d love to see it used by someone else ❤ I’ll give this one week!

And now, my list of things I want to accomplish this year (from today till next November 15th) is exactly what I had on the last list, plus international exhibitions, a master’s degree, and some charity work including working on a project to help raise awareness on depression.

I hope you’re all having a lovely weekend ❤

This was after the workshop, I was so excited I was telling everyone "I took selfies with Brooke Shaden!"

You are such an inspiration to me and your work speaks volumes to me. What you have accomplished inspires me to reach my full potential. My all time favorite quote is “Find what you love and let it kill you. Let it drain you of your all. Let it cling onto your back and weigh you down into eventual nothingness. Let it kill you and let it devour your remains. For all things will kill you, both slowly and fastly, but it’s much better to be killed by a lover.” This quote by Charles Bukowski speaks volumes to me and inspires me to continue to pursue my career in photography.

    Thank you for this opportunity,
    Kirby

    Amani, WOW!
I am so happy for you and so impressed by everything you have accomplished!

You have conquered some big steps this past year and I admire you for pursuing your dream in such a “let´s do it” manner! For me it was also a year ago – around the beginning of December – that I discovered Brooke on youtube. I was on a research trip in Wales ip for 6 weeks and felt super lonely (I am not quite a master in socializing skills), so I spent my evenings with my computer wandering around the www. And as soon as I watched that one video of her () I was hooked, I looked up her website, watched all the videos I could find. I was so inspired by her motivational words and her kind and warm and calm and happy presence, that it made me feel all warm and calm – it felt like “exactly! that!”. And through her I discovered so many amazing artists – like YOU – who inspire me and it just makes me happy to watch you grow and follow your dreams.

I hope that soon, I will find my way (and dare to allow myself) to transition into fine art, because I have so many ideas in my heart, that I wish to share with you – hoping that I can give something back to you and all the other beautiful souls that make me happy. I am not doing nothing to pursue my dream, I am just working on another end or rather beginning (or part) of it…

I am looking forward to see where your journey will lead you and I am more than happy to be able to accompany you – if only virtually… for now 😉 I know for sure that even bigger and more amazing things are coming your way and you more than deserve it!

Thank you for being you and for sharing bits of yourself! Here is a small one from me for you. It is my favourite song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvqOTjq0AjE

    Love and hugs ❤ !

I wish you all the best in life & also wish to win this dress which will hopefully inspire me.
