On shooting Natalia: Seven Days A Week of Truth and Fantasy

I mentioned in my last blog post that I did a couple of shoots with my friend Natalia. After we shot some portraits, we started doing more conceptual work. We got to create an image that I dreamed about for a long time, inspired by a music video I saw when I was around 12 or 13. I used to listen to a Swedish pop band called Play, and they made this music video and I’ve always been so in love with it:

Sometimes I feel silly admitting that I used to listen to that kind of music and admitting that I loved boy bands and all, but I think we all went through that at some point. And I’m not gonna deny that I do go back and listen to that stuff every now and then (and also sing along loud and off-key when I’m driving alone). But anyway, that music video stuck with me. I love the dresses in that video and I absolutely loved the scene with all the chalkboards and I’ve always wanted to create something like it.

I created a mood board for this image as well, just so I’d be able to explain to Natalia the overall feel I was going for.

And this is the image we created:

I only had 6 boards to create this. They weren’t chalkboards, they were just black foam boards and I stayed up late one night with my sister and we wrote down a mixture of quotes and personal stuff. Creating this was so much fun. I moved the boards around when I was shooting so that I can later composite them on photoshop and make it look like there were more than 6 boards. It’s crazy how this image came together because Natalia nailed the pose after exactly one shot. It took less than 10 minutes to get it done! It was pretty cool.

Part 3 is coming soon – can’t wait to show you guys pictures from the underwater shoot we did! ❤
p.s. I turned 24 yesterday!

  1. So cool! I love this work! It is really awesome! And why you shall feel silly to admit that you liked and like to hear this kind of music?

    • Hi Paulo! That’s a lovely quote, thank you for sharing 😀 I felt silly because now I love listening to music with deep or emotional lyrics so looking back at stuff I used to listen to, it almost seems like it’s childish? I dunno if that makes sense. I still think it’s fun music though, just not my favorite :p
